Wyoming State Samboree
June 26 thru June 29, 2008
CHEYENNE, WYOMING
FRONTIER PARK
We do not take any reservations.
You will be staying at Frontier Park which is the home of Cheyenne Frontier Days celebrations that are held the last full week of July. The park covers a little over 80 acres and has been the home of Cheyenne Frontier Days since 1907. If you look at the statues at the front of the Old West Museum which is located at the north end of the park near the road, Col. Slack is standing at the corner of Ferguson and 16th Street. By the main entrance to the Museum you will see a cowboy holding a boot upside down with water coming out. The name is "Wishful Thinking" the cowboy's never-ending search for water. Next along the walkway you will see an early pioneer lady next to a wagon wheel, it is called "No Turning Back". The women volunteers of the Museum purchased it. Near the road is a Bull Rider and it is dedicated to the memory of Lane Frost, a famous bull rider that died in competition here at Frontier Days. The last statue is of a Bronc Rider and it is dedicated to the volunteers who work here during Frontier Days. There are usually in excess of 2500 volunteers.
The Old West Museum is well worth the visit. Within the Museum is one of the most prestigious western art collections as well as the third largest buggy collection in the United States. Most of the buggies are now involved in the four parades we have during Frontier Days. Also within the Museum is the exhibition on tourism, videos on Frontier Days of the past, a Kids room, memorabilia of rodeos, and the gift shop where only authentic Cheyenne Frontier Days items can be purchased. If you notice the large red brick building that makes up most of the Museum was once a dance hall.
The Botanical Gardens are located just across Carey Avenue to the east of the Park. Below is a carved bench located at the Gardens. A very interesting place to visit.

Also Lyons Park is just to the south of the Gardens. The Municipal Pool is slightly north and east of the Park also.
There are many things to see and do while you are here. The State Capital is located at 24th Street and Capital Avenue.

Located just to the north side of the Capital is the Herschler building that was named after former Governor Ed Herschler and houses some of the State Government offices.
To the east a couple of blocks is the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center located between Warren and Evans Avenues and 22nd and 24th Streets - 214 East 23rd Street.
The State Museum is located at 2301 Central Avenue - also a very interesting place to visit.
The Historical Governor's Mansion is located at 300 East 21st Street and is a must see - absolutely beautiful.
The Veterans Center and Hospital is located at 2360 East Pershing Boulevard. The grounds are very pretty and at Christmas time it is decorated beautifully with lights and such.
During the summer there are Trolley Tours that show you some of the historical sites of Cheyenne and tells of the ghosts in the Bell Tower of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in downtown Cheyenne. A very worth while and interesting tour. When you register at the Samboree you will receive a booklet in your "Welcome" bag that will have a coupon in it to ride the Trolley.
To the west of Cheyenne is Curt Gowdy State Park. It is very quiet and has good camping spots, two boat ramps and usually good fishing - mostly rainbow trout.
